Local Determinants of Malnutrition Study Narrated Presentation

This presentation describes a methodology that FH has used to better understand the determinants of malnutrition in particular developing countries (Burundi, Mozambique, Kenya, Bolivia and Ethiopia). The study compares poor mothers who have children who are growing well with poor mothers of children who are malnourished, identifying possible messages and project activities that can make a difference in terms of preventing malnutrition. Care Group Indicator Gap Closure Presentation

This presentation compares the indicator gap closure (i.e., performance index) on 13 “Rapid CATCH” indicators measured by 58 USAID-funded child survival projects ending between 2003 and 2009, and nine child survival projects (most from the same period, but one ending in 2010) using Care Groups. The results are striking, and further confirm the value of Care Groups for bringing about behavior change.  Since this original analysis, statistical analysis was done to determine whether the differences noted in the presentation were statistically significant.  The sample size of Care Group projects was small, but there was a statistically-significant difference (p<0.05) between the overall performance index (all indicators) and also for the exclusive breastfeeding indicator.  (Please note that not all of the indicators used remained the same over time (e.g., HWWS), but the comparison was done using the original Rapid CATCH indicator list for which we had data for the CSHGP projects.)  Please click here to view slides.

Mobilizing Communities for Improved Nutrition: A Manual and Guide for Training Community Leaders

Download

The manual provides instructions for facilitating a one-day workshop with community leaders (e.g., community, religious, and business leaders and government officials) to support and improve children’s health and well-being through improved infant and young child feeding and maternal dietary practices. This workshop will help community leaders to share helpful information in their communities, increase discussion and reflection on nutrition-related topics, and support families to feed their children well.

The guide should be used in conjunction with the manual for training community leaders and aims to educate community leaders to support and improve children’s health and well-being through improved infant and young child feeding and maternal dietary practices.

Strengthening Health Talks Training Manual

Download

This manual provides step-by-step instructions to facilitate a half-day training workshop to improve the quality of group counseling sessions and health talks. Recognizing that health workers’ time is already limited, the workshop described in this manual requires only a few hours and includes content and practical exercises that focus on key changes health workers can make to ensure their health talks are more effective. The learning activities in this manual provide information and practical exercises on adult learning principles, communication and facilitation skills, and planning. This manual can be used with facility or community-based staff who provide group counseling, facilitate health talks, or lead support groups.

Infant and Young Child Feeding and Gender Manuals for Male Group Leaders

Download

The Training Manual provides male group leaders with the information and techniques they need to share information and encourage discussions on gender issues and optimal infant and young child feeding. The training curriculum described in the manual assumes strong facilitation skills on part of the participants. It describes a two-day training workshop that uses group activities, focused discussions, brainstorming, and role playing to introduce issues such as breastfeeding, complementary feeding, counseling and testing for HIV, and prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV.

This Participants’ manual serves as a reference for male group leaders who participated in the two-day training in order for them to be able to share information and encourage discussions on gender issues and support optimal maternal dietary and infant and young child feeding practices. This manual includes summaries of key content, suggested questions to promote discussion, and activities that group leaders can use when facilitatingtheir group sessions.

Download

The Application of Persuasion Principles (FH) to Food Security Programsoutlines the persuasion principles of the food security programs. The Statistical Calculators and Worksheets contains English and Spanish versions of Excel worksheets for calculating sample size (for one-time and repeat studies); generating indicator confidence intervals for both categorical and continuous data (for LQAS/SRS [d.e.=1] and cluster sampling [d.e.=2]); a worksheet that helps you choose interview areas for cluster sampling and LQAS (i.e, an automatic sampling frame); and LQAS tabulation tables where you plug in your data and project targets, decision rules are calculated automatically, and a sheet summarizes which project supervision areas are above and below target and above and below average coverage. A demo table is also included that shows how this last LQAS sheet works (with fictitious data inserted). Please click here to view the statisitical calulator and worksheets.
