IASC Gender Marker Tip Sheets: Nutrition and Food Security

Download

IASC published these documents in 2011 to demonstrate gender marker tips and guidlines. Nutrition: The purpose of this 4-page tip sheet is to help Nutrition Cluster Leads and their partners design quality nutrition projects that reflect the distinct needs of women, girls, boys and men.

Food Security 1 (Food Assistance):These guidelines introduce and promote the essential elements of participatory rangeland management (PRM). Based upon the successful experiences of participatory forest management, the guidelines provide a process following three stages of investigation, negotiation and implementation. The sequential steps of this process lead to the development of a rangeland management plan and a legally binding rangeland management agreement between a local rangeland management institution and the appropriate local government office.

Food Security 2 (Agriculture and Livelihoods): The purpose of this 4-page tip sheet is to help CCCM Cluster Leads and their partners design quality projects that reflect the distinct needs of women, girls, boys and men. The aim is to to improve projects by bringing gender dimensions into the needs analysis, the activities and the outcomes through the use of practical examples and tips and to train users in GM coding skills and provide an opportunity to practice with the vetting form.

The Potential of Indigenous Wild Foods

Download

This workshop proceedings report summaries disscussion of the Workshop on the Potential of Indigenous Food Plants, held in Diana, Kenya, 22-26 January 2001. USAID funded a indigenous wild food plant study in southern Sudan, which was intended to provide better information on the tremendous resource base already existing in southern Sudan and the potential for indigenous wild food plants (IWFPs) to play a vital role in attaining food security. With more information about what people eat and when, donor agencies will have a better idea of nutrition needs. In southern Sudan, the IWFPs study included field surveys, data collection, and community discussions. The workshop was an effort to extend lessons and information from the Sudan experience and to assess similar work in the region.

Second Food Aid and Food Security Assessment (FAFSA-2)

Download

This report is a comprehensive review of the U.S. Agency for International Development Office of Food for Peace (USAID/FFP) Title II development food aid program from FY 2003 to FY 2009. The report focuses on the areas of agriculture and natural resource management; infrastructure; maternal and child health and nutrition; water, sanitation, and hygiene; HIV; and Title II program management. Overall, the results of the FAFSA-2 analysis indicate that Title II development programs can reduce undernutrition in young children, improve a number of important maternal and child health and nutrition outcomes, and increase household access to income and food. Most importantly, many children are alive and have been spared ill health and lifelong disabilities thanks to Title II. The FAFSA-2 identifies approaches and practices that are more likely to contribute to positive food security impacts, examples of approaches and practices that have not worked well, and recommendations for future programs. A summary report is also available, which provides a synopsis of the findings and recommendations that are expanded on in the full report.

This report commissioned by World Vision and Save the Children calls for a radical rethinking of policies to address hunger in West Africa. The report aims to assess progress, lessons learned, and challenges in promoting resilience in the Sahel, with a particular focus on the well-being of children. The study demonstrates the need for a massive response by governments and partners in order to tackle child malnutrition – chronic and acute, together. It offers evidence-based recommendations for a comprehensive, child-focused approach to resilience in the Sahel.

The Nutrition Program Design Assistant: A Tool for Program Planners (NPDA) is composed of two complementary documents: a Workbook and a Reference Guide. Together, they help program design teams select the most appropriate community‐based nutrition approaches for their target area. The Workbook, which provides step‐by‐step instructions, is where the team records key information, data, decisions and decision‐making rationale. Upon completion, the Workbook provides a record of the design process. The Reference Guide provides an introduction, information on key concepts and terminology, and reference material to guide decision‐making.

Download the entire toolkit here.

Take the interactive online tutorial.

The Department of Health and Nutrition's Emergency Health and Nutrition (EHN) team at Save the Children recently launched the CMAM Toolkit, a collection of resources for rapid start up of emergency nutrition programming.  Although most of the guidelines and protocols are not new, this is the first time they have been brought together in one easy to use kit.

In addition, four NEW tools have been created to guide the process of:

1) Determining the Need for Intervention;

2) Program Planning;

3) Estimating Caseloads and;

4) Estimating Supplies Needed.

Accompanying The CMAM Toolkit is an interactive online tutorial that, in less than 30 minutes, will provide a comprehensive introduction to The Toolkit, walk you through programming tools, show you how to estimate caseloads and supplies, and help you locate and adapt tools needed for rapid implementation.

You don't need to be a nutritionist to learn more about available resources for emergency nutrition programming.

WHO convened a meeting in Geneva (September 30th - October 3rd, 2008) on the dietary management of moderate malnutrition (MM). The objectives of the meeting were to identify areas of consensus on the nutrient needs and dietary management of MM in children that can be translated into evidence-based global guidelines and to identify knowledge gaps that should be addressed by research, both in the area of dietary management and the modalities for providing that diet.
