Call for Submissions: COVID-19 Data for Decision-Making: Activity Showcases
Join IDEAL for an exciting opportunity to share and learn with peer food security practitioners on experiences of applying data for decision-making during the COVID-19 pandemic, through a virtual poster gallery walk and presentations.
What is the IDEAL COVID-19 Data Showcase?
Since the onset of COVID-19, the food security M&E sector has focused on overcoming data collection challenges posed by COVID-19 and strategies for combating these roadblocks. Now, several months into COVID-19 adaptations, it’s time to move beyond a focus on data collection and provide a forum for food security practitioners to share findings and how these findings have been used to adapt programmatic decision-making.
This digital poster showcase will be a series of five interactive, regional events with food security staff in East and Southern Africa, West Africa, Middle East and North Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, and Asia. Staff from all regions are invited to submit digital posters highlighting 1) key COVID-19-related findings, 2) how the findings have or will be used to inform activity implementation, and 3) the intended outcomes of the proposed program implementation changes.

During each regional event, participants will have a chance to do a virtual ‘gallery walk’ to look at the submitted posters and hear presentations of a number of selected posters. After the event, the posters will be collected in a publication.

Digital Poster Submissions
Who can participate?
IDEAL will be accepting submissions from current food security activities in each region. Priority will be given to posters submitted by country-based activity staff. If country-based staff are not available to present their poster, headquarters-based staff may be considered.
How can I participate?
The data shared in the poster presentation must contain data collected since the onset of COVID-19 or data that have directly informed implementation in a program navigating the COVID-19 environment within the region specified for the event. Applicants must use the provided template and follow the instructions provided in the template. Each ‘poster presentation’ should not be more than four slides. The slides should be broken down as follows:
- One slide containing a (high level) program overview and context and/or methods for the collection of the data
- One slide containing one to 1-2 graphics and/or tables presenting the data
- One slide containing no more than five bullet points highlighting how the data has or will inform programmatic decisions
- One slide containing no more than five bullet points identifying why the program adaptations were made. Specifically, were changes made to: mitigate COVID-19 transmission, reduce COVID-19 impact on program target population, protect non-program target population vulnerable populations, and/or strengthen resilience?
Applications must also contain a brief of no more than 300 words elaborating upon the content provided in the slides. For example, briefs might include the purpose of the question(s) your program sought to address, the methods used to collect and analyze the data, details about major or unexpected findings, and changes your program hopes to see based on use of these findings.
Please download the template and email your application to email@example.com. Please do NOT spend time formatting the slides since the IDEAL Communications Team will graphically design all posters.
What happens after submission?
Submissions will be reviewed against the above requirements, with the goal of including most submissions during the online event showcase. The posters will also be published in an IDEAL “COVID-19 Data for Decision-Making” showcase report. This report will be prepared after the last regional showcase.
For each event, IDEAL will select 3-6 submissions to provide a short (5 minute) presentation of their posters followed by a brief Q&A. The selection of the posters will be purposeful, with all efforts made to highlight a range of different technical areas and activity types within the food security and nutrition sector. Quality of the methods, analysis, and data use will contribute to the selection for oral presentation.
What are some benefits to participate?
All posters will be graphically edited by the IDEAL communications team to ensure professional and coherent display during the event and in the published report. The poster author(s) will have their name, role, organization, profile photo, and poster published on the event website, and in the published report.
