Launch of the SCALE Program

The Strengthening Capacity in Agriculture, Livelihoods, and Environment (SCALE) Program is a five-year Associate Award funded by the USAID Office of Food for Peace (FFP) from January 2018-January 2023. Implemented by Mercy Corps in collaboration with Save the Children, this program builds on agricultural activities implemented under the Technical and Operational Performance Support (TOPS) Program (www.thetopsprogram.org).

SCALE is designed to further improve the impact, sustainability, and scalability of FFP's activities in agriculture, natural resource management, and livelihoods. Specifically, the program will focus on sustainable and climate-sensitive approaches that foster resilient agricultural systems, and enhance income opportunities within agricultural systems and off-farm livelihoods.

The program will combine capacity strengthening with knowledge sharing and management to improve technical expertise and programmatic impact across FFP's global portfolio in both emergency and development contexts.

SCALE will:

  • Identify and design packages of adult-centered learning approaches in complementary technical topics adapted to different audiences;
  • Place a specific emphasis on building evidence across agencies;
  • Promote identified best practices while highlighting innovations and technologies; and
  • Develop systems that will allow for greater sustainability of capacity strengthening and knowledge management efforts.

A strategic approach to knowledge capture, generation, application, and sharing will establish long-term processes and measure results.
