While the resilience community has significantly advanced analytical approaches, learning, and programming designed to strengthen resilience capacities, there is a need for deeper understanding of, and actionable and scalable solutions to, the complex and compounding shocks and stresses in areas characterized by high levels of insecurity, recurrent crises, and displacement. One program in such a context is the USAID-funded Rural Resilience Activity (RRA) in Northeast (NE) Nigeria. To address this knowledge gap, REAL has undertaken a series of iterative, mixed-methods research activities to examine key resilience capacities in target communities and systems. The focus will be on determining the extent to which RRA programmatic strategies and interventions affect these capacities and, in turn, well-being outcomes in a context characterized by high levels of displacement, conflict and insecurity, climate-related shocks, and food insecurity. Given the complexity of programming and dynamic nature of the operational area, the study was designed to be flexible and adaptive, with multiple components used to triangulate findings and respond to anticipated changes in the study context.

REAL conducted an initial qualitative assessment to ground the research and refine the design of subsequent quantitative and qualitative data collection activities. Findings from the initial assessment were presented to key stakeholders in July 2022.

REAL initiated a multi-level, mixed-methods qualitative and quantitative recurrent monitoring survey (RMS) conducted between August 2022 and September 2023. REAL carried out this RMS in close collaboration with RRA, to ensure the findings from each round and the implementation of subsequent rounds reflected changes in the activity and its dynamic operating context. Preliminary analysis from the four rounds of RMS has been presented to key stakeholders.

Lastly, REAL will conduct an in-depth qualitative inquiry in 2024, which will provide more detailed information to complement the RMS analysis and further explore key trends and issues identified through iterative rounds of the RMS.
