To complement unconditional cash transfers in Sierra Leone and ensure local markets could respond to increased demand from program beneficiaries, Save the Children supported 400 small-scale traders to restock under its USAID-funded Emergency Food Security Program. Through conditional cash grants, traders attended lessons on record-keeping and improved business skills, and were capitalized to replenish and increase their stocks. Save the Children’s findings indicated that the trader support helped to make more food available locally to beneficiary communities, and empowered traders to operate their businesses with improved practices.
