This manual is organized as follows: (1) we introduce the social-ecological systems framework (Ostrom 2007, 2009) that we use or organize our indicators; (2) we describe each of the social and ecological indicators in detail, including what they represent and how they are operationalized; (3) we provide further detail on the social science theory underpinning some of our indicators and how the indicators can be used to form composite indexes; and (4) we provide some information on impact evaluation in the context of global monitoring.
