The purpose of this study was to contribute knowledge that will help the Global Center for Food Systems Innovation (GCFSI) to answer its pilot implementation question in Malawi of “Where and how can multipurpose legumes be scaled for sustainable intensification of maize systems and what would the potential impacts be, in the medium term, across the food system in Malawi?” The research focused on pigeon pea as a multipurpose legume. A gender analysis of this value chain was based on our recognition that from production to processing, gendered patterns of behavior and resource allocation condition the activities of men and women value chain actors, the distribution of resources and benefits derived from value chain activities, and the efficiency and competitiveness of the value chain.
