More Agricultural Intensification, More Deforestation?

This briefing describes the use of a "serious gaming" methodology to understand smallholder farmers' decisions on agricultural intensification or farmland expansion in two sites in the Ethiopian highlands. The approach was used to explore with farmers, in a "safe space," whether an increase in agricultural productivity and profitability would reduce or end farmland expansion. The results show that it will not do so in all cases.
