Survey on Gender and Youth Integration

Annually, the Gender and Youth Activity (GAYA) conducts a survey of implementers on their gender and youth knowledge, attitudes, and practices. Through participation in this survey, respondents share valuable insights on gender and youth integration challenges and successes. In both 2022 and 2023, over 600 implementers worldwide responded to this survey. GAYA compiles these results to showcase important trends and highlight evidence-based recommendations for implementers.

2023 Survey Results

In July 2023, GAYA conducted its second annual survey on gender and youth integration, which implementers from around the world completed voluntarily (resulting in a non-random, non-representative sample). The dashboards below present the responses of over 600 implementers, showcasing their attitudes, practices, and knowledge related to gender and youth integration.

What can you do with these results? Explore the dashboards by clicking on the arrows below the graphs and share your thoughts on these findings by completing our brief survey here.

  • Use the filters for program type, job role, gender, and country to further explore nuance in the data.
  • These dashboards show the results according to four program types: BHA-funded Resilience Food Security Activities (RFSAs) and emergency programs, as well as individuals that support both RFSAs and emergency programs (labeled as both), and other program types.
  • If a bar graph is empty, it means the filters have excluded all data; remove one or more filters to see more information.
  • Some respondents may have reported their gender as non-binary. To protect their identity in countries where sexual and gender minorities are at risk, GAYA has excluded these respondents from any disaggregated analysis that might create a risk of them being identified.

2022 Survey Results

In August - September 2022, GAYA conducted the first round of the survey, which implementers from around the world completed voluntarily (resulting in a non-random, non-representative sample).

To complement the 600+ implementer survey responses, GAYA conducted key informative interviews and data validation workshops. From this research, GAYA developed the following resources:

  • Evidence-Based Guide to Action: This 11-page brief summarizing key research findings and recommendations for implementers.
  • Formative Research Report: Prepared by an external consultant, this report details the full research methodology, key research findings, and recommendations to drive GAYA’s work. Illustrating Insights.
  • Graphic Recording: GAYA shared three key recommendations with implementers on March 28, 2023 in a webinar that showcased examples of implementers integrating these recommendations into their work. These three recommendations, and the conversations that flowed from them, are presented in a descriptive graphic.
  • Step-by-step: A Roadmap to Gender and Youth Integration in Food Security and Resilience Programs: This resource details the ideal sequence of action implementers should take to integrate gender and youth considerations across program phases. Based on input from implementers around the world, this resource is a collaborative effort to support the implementing community ensure inclusion in their food security programs.
  • Gender Core Competencies and Youth Core Competencies: These documents, and the accompanying self-rating tools, are designed to help Gender and Youth Leads identify any gaps in their technical skill set. Throughout the document, there are links to key resources Gender and Youth Leads can use to help address any identified gaps and strengthen their capacity.
