In May 2021, USAID released its first standard definition of menstrual health and hygiene (MHH), which incorporates a wide range of sectors and programming areas that contribute to better and more inclusive outcomes for all menstruators. This technical brief builds on that definition by highlighting specific ways in which each sector or budget line can have the greatest impact within existing mandates and aligned with Agency priorities. It intends to bridge the gaps created by the siloed sectoral approaches often utilized by the global community by defining MHH for USAID and its partners, outlining key challenges to and opportunities for improving MHH, and making recommendations for USAID staff and partners to consider in designing and implementing activities within different sectors that contribute to a holistic MHH approach.
