The "SanPlan" tool can be used to design sanitation programs by exploring highly-localized, contextual, spatial data. It was built as a follow-on to USAID's Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene Partnerships and Learning for Sustainability (WASHPaLS) Performance Envelope research, which sought to examine how local context and program implementation strategies affect Community-Led Total Sanitation outcomes across multiple countries. The aim of this research is to provide governments, donors, and implementing organizations with insights to i) target rural sanitation activities to areas with the highest likelihood of success, and ii) adapt implementation strategies to maximize the chances for their success and sustainability.
